MANUAL NETWORK CLIENT

How to connect to the License server

A network software license allows Pythagoras to be used on a client computer by connecting to a central license server. Below is a step-by-step guide on the initial installation and how to use Pythagoras in various work scenarios: in the office, remotely, or in the field without internet access.

Installing Pythagoras

Step 1: Download and Install Pythagoras

Before using a network software license, Pythagoras must be installed on the client computer.

  1. Download Pythagoras from the Download Pythagoras page (more info: How to download Pythagoras).
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions (more info: How to install Pythagoras).
  3. After installation, Pythagoras is ready for the first launch.

Step 2: Connect to the License Server

Automatic Server Detection (Default)

Upon first launch, Pythagoras attempts to automatically locate the license server.

  1. Start Pythagoras.
  2. If a server is available on the network, the license is automatically retrieved.
  3. You can now use Pythagoras.

If automatic detection fails, check with your network administrator to see if the server settings have been modified. Then proceed with manual configuration.

Manual Configuration of the License Server

If the license server is not automatically found, configure it manually.

  1. Open a web browser and go to localhost:1947 (Sentinel Admin Control Center).
  2. In the Admin Control Center, click on Configuration > Access to remote license managers.
  3. Enter the IP address or broadcast address of the license server.
  4. Click on Submit and close the window.
  5. Restart Pythagoras to test the connection.

If the connection fails, verify with your IT department that you have the correct server details.

Working with a Network License

Once Pythagoras is correctly installed and activated, it can be used in various work environments. Below are the options for working in the office, remotely, and in the field without internet.

Working in the office within the same network as the server

Once the license server is correctly configured (see Step 2: Connect to the license server):

  • Pythagoras automatically retrieves an available license upon startup.
  • Upon closing, the license is released for other users.

No license available? Wait until another user releases the license or contact IT.

Working Remotely

If you are working remotely (outside the company network), connecting to the license server depends on the settings configured by your system administrator or IT department. Possible options include:

  1. Via a VPN Connection (Recommended)

    • This is the most secure solution as the connection is secured with a username and password.
    • Consult your IT department on how to set up a VPN connection.
    • Once the VPN connection is active, the network license functions as it does within the company network.
  2. Via a Fixed IP Address with Port Forwarding

    • Some companies use port forwarding on port 1947 to allow external access to the license server.
    • This can pose a security risk and is less recommended than a VPN.

Working Without Internet or Network Access

When working without a stable internet connection or network access, it is possible to temporarily detach a license from the license server. This allows you to use Pythagoras offline for a specified period. After this period, the license automatically returns to the server. Read the article How to detach a Network SL for offline use.

If the connection fails, verify with your IT department that you have the correct server details.
